New Comers

New comers are asked to speak to a Welcome Team member after Mass who will provide them with the information they require and newcomer’s forms. Please fill in the A1 form immediately (to be left with the Welcome Team who will ensure that the Rector receives it). Please return the A2 form and place it in the Rector’s post box at 34 Park Avenue across the road from the church.
Newcomers meetings are usually held at the Rector’s discretion about twice a year.

Tithing

It is very important that as Christians we should take our tithing seriously!

"Let everyone give accordingly as they determined in their heart, nor grudgingly or from compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”    2 Corinthians: 9:7

If you do not have a pledge number, please make sure that you get one from the Parish Secretary.

Hospitalization

Please ensure that the Parish Secretary receives correct details about your hospitalization. Please inform the hospital staff that you are a member of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa. We also ask that you inform the secretary once you are discharged from hospital. 021 5518529



Prayer Chain

The Parish has around 17 parishioners who are on the prayer chain team. They are responsible for praying for persons in need. The names are forwarded to them by the Rector via SMS.

Home Visits/Communions

For parishioners who are bed-ridden or unable to get to church and who would like to receive Communion, this can be arranged through the Rector.

Marriages

Couples intending to get married must meet with the Rector 3 months before the marriage date. At the first meeting couples must bring their Identity documents. Couples are compelled to attend the Alpha Marriage course.

Baptism

Baptism Preparation

Parishioners wanting their babies baptized must be regular at worship and be pledge - paying members of the parish. Initially, there will be a meeting in the hall, for making application, and filling in the necessary forms.

This is followed by 3 sessions of Baptism Preparation, which includes a rehearsal. God parents will need to be present for these. The Baptism itself follows; taking place during the course of a 9.00 am Mass

First Communion Classes

This takes place every second year.




Layministers

Lay Ministers meet once a month or more if required.

Sacristans

This is a group of laypersons who take care of all things in the sacristy (priest vestry) and who help prepare all things needed for the liturgy.

Readers

Members of the congregation may volunteer to read the lessons at the services. A roster is drawn up regularly.

Choir

Our church has been blessed with a choir and if you enjoy singing, choir practice is held on a Thursday evenings at 19:00. The choir sings at the 9:00 Sunday Eucharist and major church festivals.

Welcome Team

The role of the Welcome Team is to make the initial contact with visitors, and ensure that they are welcome at St Oswald’s. They greet people as they arrive for the service, hand out pew leaflets, assist with the collection and make sure that totals of persons at services are kept. They will also supply newcomers’ forms when needed.

Small Christian Communities (House Churches)

Groups of mainly parishioners meet usually once a week in someone’s home to study the bible or other relevant material such as the Renew Africa programme. If you are interested in being part of such a group, please contact the Parish office 021 5518529.



Wholeness Task Team

One group that falls under the auspices of the Wholeness Task Team is the Task Team that focuses on making up food packs every month for the needy in Joe Slovo. These are distributed by St Luke’s. Packs are made up on the last Saturday of each month at 08:30am. There is also an ongoing project of knitting squares which are crocheted together to make blankets. These are for orphans in the "Care for Kids” program.

Cancer Support Group

A new group is being established within the parish in order to support and educate those living with cancer. You are warmly invited to participate. There is a list in the church to which you can add your name, or please contact Tracy Higgins, co-ordinator,  083 3757303 or tracy.higgins@telkomsa.net



Sunday Teas

Sunday teas are served every Sunday of the month after the 9:00 Mass by different teams of parishioners.

These are held once a month on the first Wednesday of the month after the 9:30 a.m Mass.

Fund Raising

Various fund raisers will take place during the year with the Annual bazaar being held on the first Saturday in September.

Men's Group

This is a time for the men of the Parish to get together for a few hours to enjoy fellowship with each other. Dates will be announced

Flower Arranging

Flowers

We have flower arrangements regularly in the church for Sundays and special occasions. If you have a talent and would like to offer your skills please contact the Parish office 021 5518529.



Sewing and Craft Club

This group meet in the St Oswald’s church hall. If you know how to sew, knit, crochet, bead, mosaic or paint please come along and join the friendship circle.  If you’d like to learn any of these crafts please come along too as everyone is welcome.  Any questions please call Carol Minshall - 084 506 5258 after hours to confirm the date of the next meeting which is generally on alternate Saturdays at 2 p.m.
